A part-time Harwich resident since 2013, Stenzel has generously donated some of her dazzling paintings, and all sale proceeds will benefit HCT. Have a creative night out, enjoy delicious appetizers catered by the Family Table Collaborative and bring home a spectacular work of art that will add sparkle to the Cape’s most exciting season.

Stenzel’s energetic brushstrokes and colorful palette capture beautiful moments, suspended in time, with subjects that include landscapes, wildlife and flowers. “I am a very spontaneous painter,” she said. “I don’t plan things ahead. And when I get inspired by something that I see, I just go for it.”

She’s also a big fan of HCT’s mission and publicly-accessible properties. “I really do like what the Harwich Conservation Trust is doing,” said Stenzel. “I’ve visited many of their sites and think they’re absolutely great.”

From France to Harwich

Born in Antibes, France, Stenzel spent the later years of her childhood and young adulthood near Strasbourg, in the northeastern part of the country. Her family was immersed in music, literature, design and horticulture, inspiring her appreciation for the creative process.

Eventually moving to the United States, Stenzel attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she earned a master’s degree in German Studies. Her degree, and her fluency in German and French, led to faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the Chapin School in New York City.

For many years, she was Head of the Modern Language Department at the Winsor School in Boston, where she lives with her husband, Ron Agel.

Stenzel is inspired by the work of Vincent Van Gogh, and prefers to paint with oils, although she has experience with watercolors, charcoal and acrylics.

On her website, she writes that “painting is for me foremost an emotional language that is uniquely expressive and direct. It provides both the artist and the viewer an uncommon opportunity to feel free from all restrictions and reach a rare vision of serenity when turbulent times can be suspended.”
