Describe your volunteer activities at HCT:
Most of my work for HCT consists of maintenance of bird nest boxes. Our yard backs up to HCT’s 66-acre Bank Street Bog Nature Preserve, which I help monitor on an almost daily basis. This year I expect to be mowing the walking trails too. It is a gift to share in the life of this wild sanctuary!

How long have you volunteered?
I have been a regular volunteer since retiring in 2011, but began some work on the Bank St. Bogs Nature Preserve years ago when my daughter, Melissa, was a volunteer for AmeriCorps.

What do you like most about it, memorable moments?
What I like most is meeting and working with people passionate about preserving the land and thereby the wildlife. The most memorable moments have been rescuing two ailing red-tailed hawks in the past few years. Both were successfully rehabilitated by Wild Care in Orleans and returned to HCT’s Preserve.

What’s special about Harwich?
Harwich is full of the people who understand we share in a unique environment and that it is incumbent upon us to protect it. Harwich is home because my wife, Sue and her parents, discovered it in the early 1950s and fell in love. We did, too, a little later, literally!

What else do you like to do for fun or other activities or volunteering?
I have presently applied for a volunteer position with the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and I have volunteered on several past projects for Rotary.
