Doug Karlson
Describe your volunteer activities at HCT:
I recently volunteered to do Coastsweep on Red River Beach which was terrific, and after attending many of HCT’s meetings and events, I decided to volunteer to help maintain their trails and properties.
How long have you volunteered?
This is my first year.
What do you like most about it, memorable moments?
As I said I’m new, but I think the other volunteers are very friendly and interesting and the work that needs doing is fun, outdoors, and in a very beautiful locale, so it’s a winning combination. I like that I am helping to preserve and protect our town’s incredible environment.
What’s special about Harwich?
It’s a vibrant seaside community with a lot going on. I’ve always loved it here and have family roots – I live in a house originally bought my by great grandfather in the late 1800s.
What else do you like to do for fun or other activities or volunteering?
I like to ski and hike and sail, do things with my children, go to the movies (Cape Cinema), listen to live music and get out to cultural events on the Cape. I’m also a writer and I work at Cape Cod Five. I sometimes write articles for Appalachian Mountain Club SE Mass Chapter newsletter, and I help out here and there as I have time.
