Dave_Callaghan_Jan2013_optDescribe your volunteer activities at HCT:
Primarily, I work with the Boundary Quest team, where we verify the boundaries of protected lands.  We are currently locating bounds around the Monomoy River Conservation Lands off Bay Road.  When not in the field, I’ve been doing online research using the Registry of Deeds and Town Assessor’s web sites.  I’ve also been involved with cutting invasive plants and cleaning up trash on HCT lands.

How long have you volunteered?
It started with Coast Sweep the last couple of years, but it’s only since September that I’ve been able to give more time.

What do you like most about it, memorable moments?
Having spent the last 20 years at desk jobs, being outdoors is a refreshing change.  There’s also a lot of satisfaction when we unearth concrete bounds under inches of forest debris.

What’s special about Harwich?
My parents started vacationing in Harwich before I was born.  I spent most summers here, working at the A&W and as a life guard at Red River Beach.  It was always a dream to live full time here which we were finally able to do two years ago.  I may not have gone to school here, but Harwich was what I’ve always considered home.

What else do you like to do for fun or other activities or volunteering?
When not on Boundary Quest there is always an unlimited amount of trash pick-up with HCT and the Senior Conservation Corps.  I’m also involved with our neighborhood association and working on wooden boats at Karl’s Boat Shop.
