Video: Bird’s-eye view of HCT’s Herring River Watershed Land & Marsh View Trail Project

The Herring River is at the heart of a wetland wilderness ecosystem that is rich in biodiversity. Over many years, HCT has been diligently preserving priority lands that help protect the estuary, the health of the river and the variety of wildlife that depend on the marsh for survival.

Salt marshes rival tropical rain forests and coral reefs as one of the most biologically rich ecosystems on Earth. As the deep blue Herring River runs through the windswept green grasses, fiddler crabs scurry along the edge, ospreys soar overhead, and herons and egrets search for small fish in the tidal creeks.

A dense corridor of commercial development along Route 28 blocks access to the marsh. Now we have a chance to create a new trailhead with access to a panoramic vista.

For a long time, there’s been a key half-acre property fronting Route 28 just out of HCT. The parcel languished in bank foreclosure. Finally, the stars have aligned to acquire the gateway property. Let’s unlock an opportunity to create a wheelchair accessible boardwalk offering stunning salt marsh views.
