Take a seat and take a pic: HCT wants your bench selfies
This spiffy new bench was recently installed at Pleasant Bay Woodlands.
We were so inspired by the new bench at Harwich Conservation Trust’s (HCT) Pleasant Bay Woodlands, that we decided to launch a new “On the Bench” photo feature!
The next time you are relaxing and reflecting on a well-placed HCT bench, take a selfie–let’s call it a “benchie,” and send it to eric@harwichconservationtrust.org. Group portraits are great, too–the only rule is there’s got to be an HCT bench in the pic, providing the perfect perch.
We’ll put your images into a boffo photo gallery that will prove once and for all that it’s OK to sit down on the job!
The new bench at Pleasant Bay Woodlands was installed by HCT AmeriCorps member Lillian Pogany and stalwart HCT volunteers. We think they picked out the perfect spot with a nice view, so see if you can find it on your next visit.
A good bench, humble, patient and strong, is the quiet superhero of the trail. It stands ready for weary bottoms, pleasant chitchat and the chance to comfortably immerse yourself in nature.
Classic HCT bench design
Everyone can enjoy a classic Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) bench, like this one at the Hinckleys Pond–Herring River Headwaters Preserve.
All HCT bench construction follows a tried and true design developed by Colin Leonard, a member of HCT’s Board of Trustees. Leonard, a well-known general contractor, said the original concept came from an influential volume, “Handbook of Landscape Architectural Construction,” edited by noted landscape architect Jot D. Carpenter, who was also an Ohio State University professor and a National Park Service consultant.
Many of these super seats are crafted by the woodworking wizards from the Chatham-Harwich Newcomers Club, under the direction of Steve Patzman and Jonas Robinson.
Once built, the benches are piled into the faithful HCT pickup truck and dropped off as close to the setting spot as possible. The HCT team then uses shovels, concrete and the all-important level for installation.
So, treat yourself to a good, old-fashioned sit-down at an HCT bench. And don’t forget to send your bench pics to eric@harwichconservationtrust.org. While the HCT community is celebrated for being engaged and active, it’s OK to take a rest every now and then!
