In Massachusetts, American woodcocks, a type of shorebird, are found in shrubby forested lands. In early spring they are known for their courtship display, which involves a "sky dance" and a distinctive "peent" call, particularly during spring migration and the breeding season.
Come and take a short walk with us as we search for these elusive yet fascinating birds on a moonlit evening at Cornelius Pond Woodlands. We will listen carefully for the “peent” call and if we are lucky, be able to observe the “sky dance.” Learn about their habitat, diet and where and when to look for them. What threatens them? When are they around? How do we find them?
Bring a headlamp and/or a flashlight (for walking only), binoculars, insect repellent, sturdy closed toe shoes, water and weather appropriate clothes.
This walk is dependent on good weather. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see a woodcock, you’ll have fun trying and certainly learn all about this unique and reclusive wild neighbor inhabiting local conservation lands.
