This is a free guided walk led by Land Stewards Connor O’Brien of Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) and Julie Baca of Chatham Conservation Foundation (CCF). Learn about Cape Cod’s unique plant communities, freshwater waterways, and habitat restoration potential at HCT’s Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve in Harwich Port. Over the past few years, Julie has been enthusiastically working to expand her knowledge of Cape Cod flora. She will discuss plant identification basics, pointing out both native and invasive plant species. Connor will teach walk participants about the function of wetlands, freshwater waterways, and estuaries on Cape Cod and the important fish species that rely on those habitats. Eagerly awaiting the herring running every year, and having worked in environmental education, this is a subject that Connor loves to talk about.
In 2001, HCT preserved 66 acres of wetland and surrounding upland in the heart of Harwich Port. The Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve protects wildlife habitat, water quality, and walking trails. Cold Brook flows through the 66 acres to Saquatucket Harbor on Nantucket Sound. In the fall of 2015, the Preserve was named in honor of Robert F. Smith, HCT Founding Trustee and President for 27 years.
This is HCT’s largest conservation destination and includes a Bluebird Trail with 44 nestboxes monitored by volunteers from the Cape Cod Bird Club and HCT.
