As the days grow shorter in the fall, deciduous plants begin to prepare for the coming winter. They decrease the production of chlorophyll, the pigment that allows for photosynthesis and gives leaves their green color. As the chlorophyll is depleted, other pigments present in the leaves and influenced by the sun become visible, painting the landscape in a variety of autumnal hues. The leaves will eventually fall to the ground as our local flora settle in for a long winter’s nap.
