Since 1987, thousands of COASTSWEEP volunteers have removed hundreds of tons of marine debris and other trash from Massachusetts beaches, lakes, rivers, and the seafloor. Each fall, COASTSWEEP volunteers not only help to make the coast cleaner and safer, but also record information about the types and amounts of marine debris they find. That information is sent to the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management where the data is analyzed and used to help reduce marine debris.
This year, volunteers will again be participating in the COASTSWEEP cleanup of Harwich shorelines coordinated by the Harwich Conservation Trust, Harwich Conservation Department, and Harwich Natural Resources Department.
Please join your fellow volunteers on Saturday, October 28nd, 10:00 a.m. at Saquatucket Harbor Harbormaster's Workshop for our local Harwich COASTSWEEP beach cleanup.
Volunteers will meet at the Harwich Harbormaster's workshop at Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port to gather pickers, gloves, and bags. They will then spread out across Harwich beaches to clean their chosen locations, returning with bags of trash and recycling and for Halloween treats. In the spirit of Halloween, we encourage participants to wear a costume. Prizes will be given out for best home-made costume and best store-bought costume!
