Please join naturalist and 12th generation Cape Codder Todd Kelley at the D. Isabel Smith Monomoy River Conservation Lands to learn about the history of Captain Jethro's Farm. Consider the contrast between Indigenous land title rights and early European settlers’ rights on this parcel that has quietly remained a great marvel of local historic relevance. We’ll explore the concept of land ownership and how this area remained under Indigenous title up to 1816 with the passing of Micah Rafe. We will make the connection of how the Indigenous man Joshua Jethro first came to claim and settle Captain Jethro’s farm and how title rights were legally passed on to the last generation of Indigenous ownership. Finally, we will give care to the prominent biblical names taken on by this area’s Indigenous forefathers.
